After a drab draw against the Chicago Fire, it became quite clear that New York City FC saved their best drama for off the field.

Defender Ethan White joined Khiry Shelton and Mikey Lopez as surprise cuts from the NYCFC 18.

Ethan White picked up an injury prior to the match. Meanwhile, Khiry Shelton and Mikey Lopez were suspended for New York City FC‘s match against the Chicago Fire Sunday evening for conduct on social media, head coach Patrick Vieira said.

“Khiry and Mikey Lopez were supposed to be part of the team,” Vieira said postgame, “but I was not really pleased about the message on the internet about the video. I think that was disrespectful to Chicago and that is not the message that I want from the players.”

It is unclear which video is in question. An interview posted by NYCFC’s Twitter account has Shelton saying NYCFC would ‘come out with fire and pull away with a win.’ If that is the case, Lopez’s involvement is unclear.

Neither player were made available for comment after the game.

“I want my players to be humble and to work hard,” Vieira continued, “and try to perform and win games and not spend too much time on the social media and sending negative messages that don’t reflect the football club.

“It is important for me to send them the message,” he continued. “And it is important for them to understand that the message they are sending is bigger than themselves.”

Furthering the team’s pregame roster woes was Ethan White, who was slated to start Sunday’s match at right back but suffered a hamstring injury during warmups. Frédéric Brillant replaced him in the starting lineup and played 90 minutes.
