Sky Blue coach Christy Holly proved last year that he’ll take players from wherever he can find them — so long as they have skill and fit in with the team culture and chemistry he’s trying to build.

That’s good news for players interested in wearing the Sky Blue FC crest during the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) 2017 season but weren’t drafted. The New Jersey-based team will hold open tryouts on March 1 and 2 at a yet-to-be-determined venue in Monmouth County.

“Last year, we proved that players can come to tryouts and not only be on the roster but on the playing field,” Holly said. “We found several players last year during tryouts who had an impact on our season.”

Most notably, outside back Erin Simon became a fixture at outside back and Kelly Conheeney scored the game-winner in the season opener in Seattle after missing nearly two years to a head injury that lead to a concussion.

This year, Sky Blue FC may have a stronger foundation than a year ago. The club recently finished its second strong draft and of the 10 picks, seven could be in the starting lineup this summer.

Cost for the trials will be $90, and online registration is currently open.

Any players who are interested in taking part must register online by Feb. 28 and all participants must be at least 18. All trialists will be required to sign a liability waiver, and proof of medical insurance must be provided during the registration process. Players will have the opportunity to upload a resume when they register online.

There will be one training session conducted on the first day of tryouts =from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with check-in beginning at 10 a.m. The second day of tryouts will be by invite only after day one assessment and will begin at 11 a.m. Times are subject to change, but participants will be notified in advance if any alterations are made to the schedule. Trialists must bring both outdoor and indoor footwear with gear suitable for a grass or turf surface, and all registrants will be provided a Sky Blue FC t-shirt.
