Goals, assists … those are usually the kinds of achievements that earn you recognition in the world of soccer.

That is what makes Sky Blue FC defender Christie Rampone’s honor so special.

The team captain and veteran US Women’s National Team star earned NWSL Player of the Week honors after leading Sky Blue to their third consecutive shutout victory. Rampone played the full 90 minutes for Sky Blue FC’s two games in Week 6 (both on the road), defeating the Portland Thorns 1-0 and earning a 3-0 win against Seattle Reign FC later in the week.

To her credit, the 37 year old defender has also played every single minute for the club this season.

“Both wins on the road last week were a tribute to quality team defending, and Christie is our leader on defense,” said Head Coach Jim Gabarra. “We are very fortunate to have her as an allocated player to provide us leadership and stability.”

Rampone is the second Sky Blue player to earn the honor this year. SBFC keeper Brittany Cameron took home the honors in week one with a shutout win over Western New York at Yurcak Field. The team has allowed a all of four goals in their seven matches this season, catapulting them to a first place tie with NWSL favorites, the Thorns.

“With these individual awards, it really reflects on how well the team is playing as a group,” Gabarra noted.

Rampone is set to join the US Women’s National Team for their friendly match against Canada on June 2nd at BMO Field in Toronto. She is the second most capped player in US history and the highest capped active player in the world with 280 appearances on the international level.
