Sources: Alex Ring to sign with NYCFC this week, join preseason camp

Finnish midfielder Alexander Ring will finalize his move to New York City FC according to a source close to the negotiations.

EoS is able to confirm reports from outlets overseas that Ring would leave FC Kaiserslautern with six months left on his contract for a move to NYCFC. Ring was in New York for a physical on Sunday and should be set to join the rest of the squad in Florida for preseason training this week.

Ring, 25, is a Finnish international who can play defensive midfield or on the right. He would fill City’s need for defensive midfielders after the retirement of Andoni Iraola and the expiration of Federico Bravo’s loan deal. Their lone option at defensive midfield, Mikey Lopez, is sidelined until at least late April as he recovers from arthroscopic surgery on his ankle.

Ring would be NYCFC’s tenth international player. According to unofficial counts made by EoS and elsewhere, that would fill their allotment of international players. A request for clarification with the club remains unanswered. It is highly unlikely that Ring would become the team’s third Designated Player.
