Sources: Deltas looking to add former Cosmos mid Szetela

The uncertainty in the North American Soccer League is not stopping the San Francisco Deltas from forming their roster for 2017.

EoS has learned that the Deltas are looking to lure longtime New York Cosmos fan favorite, Danny Szetela, to their ranks.

Szetela, 29, returned to professional soccer with the New York Cosmos in 2013, following a two year injury-laden hiatus. He appeared in 83 regular season matches with the Cosmos, scoring five goals and adding two assists from the defensive midfield position. He was an integral part of the Cosmos’ three titles in four seasons, making him the ideal pickup for the Deltas, who are looking for experienced NASL players for the coming competition.

Szetela was rumored for an NYCFC move two weeks ago, but nothing came of the conversations. Former teammate, Jairo Arrieta, became the first former Cosmos player to move on, signing with Herediano this week.

The NASL is still in a state of flux. Recently, sources told EoS that the league is set for a return in 2017, with a possible 7-8 teams in the competition. That report is bolstered by the Delta’s activity, as a possible Szetela signing would be the fifth for the team this offseason following the acquisition of Nana Attakora, Jackson Henrique Gonçalves Pereira, and Romuald Peiser.
