As reported yesterday, the 24 year old defender revealed via Twitter that his contract with the club had been “torn up.”
Many have speculated whether the issue was behavioral. According to a source close to the situation, that isn’t the case; it was “simply a numbers game.”
“The club is making moves to strengthen the squad,” EoS was told,”and some of them are coming to fruition sooner then expected and the numbers didn’t add up.”
Another source with knowledge of the situation confirmed the story.
The Red Bulls left the door open for Ruthven to return this year after cutting him last November. He was a vital part of the team’s franchise record tying five game winning streak last season.

@EmpireOfSoccer does this mean we can expect more signings before 4/15? Possibly confidence in getting DP3 this summer?
@Chris_Hoenig @EmpireOfSoccer Its nonsense, how can an off salary player make that kind of difference?
If someone else has to be moved to off Salary status it might make a difference but other wise you are correct
@ColinFrench1 @empireofsoccer if wouldn’t shock me if we were counting pennies at this point
@EmpireOfSoccer Moves coming to fruition sooner rather than later implies imminent additions, no?
