Sources: NYCFC are not targeting Ashley Cole

Ashley Cole and Jay Z

The annual tradition of Ashley Cole-to-MLS rumors resumed today as Sky Italia reported the Roma leftback would join his former teammate, Patrick Vieira, at New York City FC for the coming campaign.

And like previous years, that report has been met with stiff denials from reliable sources.

With that, Empire of Soccer has learned that Cole is not in NYCFC’s offseason plans.

Cole has been linked to several MLS clubs throughout the past three years, including the New York Red Bulls. He rejected a contract offer from MLS in 2014 to join Roma of Serie A fame. At the time, Cole told reporters that he was “not ready to relax on a beach yet” regarding an MLS move.

Instead, he has been relaxing on the bench, having not made a competitive appearance for the club since last March. In fact, Cole has struggled to find playing time anywhere in his recent travels. His last regular starting gig came in the 2012/13 season with Chelsea, where he managed 31 appearances for the Premier League powerhouse. Since then? He has appeared in just 28 games.

The English defender has been linked to a return to the Premier League on a free transfer to Aston Villa.

Good. We don’t need another aging superstar who doesn’t take playing here seriously.

I agree no more old players,Cole was never a superstar just a good player and that was 5 years ago.

NYCFC really has to start focusing on non-DP’s. I think that is how they are going to look at there next season if they are smart about it and wanna win. If not they will get new DP players and bank on the jerseys and merch sales.

  • Cole was one of the greatest left wing backs in history and could easily play and help nycfc

Really? After he already equated coming to MLS as relaxing on a beach? How hard would you expect him to work when he thinks so little of the league?

  • Enav

ever since he made that comment about relaxing on a beach, I don’t think any MLS teams should sign him – let him rot on the bench

  • Maybe you’re right but he’s not coming either way. Is still pretty damn good though

Maybe he is, maybe he isn’t. But we know if he’s not going to work all-out, then we don’t want him here.

Yeah take someone from the draft for 50g,you’ll be better off

Like most of your **** big name stars who came here to sit on their ass and do nothing. The only big name you had who played hard was David Villa. You guys are a study in how NOT to sign DPs.
