Cosmos Announce Sponsorship Extension With Emirates

The New York Cosmos and Emirates Airlines will continue their relationship for another two years the club announced Sunday in Dubai.

Emirates signed on to become the Cosmos’ shirt sponsor for the 2013 NASL Fall Season, the Cosmos’ first, and expressed their pleasure with the Cosmos winning the Fall Championship and the Soccer Bowl. Emirates’ Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations Sheikh Majid Al Mualla said he was delighted with the club’s progress.

Emirates will now be the club’s shirt sponsor through 2018. If the deal is under the context of their most recent partnership, that would see the Cosmos earning an expected annual sum of $1 million for the sponsorship.

“It would seem the Emirates’ magic has worked again,”  Al Mualla said. “The New York Cosmos’ progress is nothing short of meteoric and the extension of our sponsorship agreement enables this wonderful journey with Emirates to continue. As our cabin crew say ‘Welcome back on board.'”

Cosmos chairman Seamus O’Brien and honorary president Pele were both on hand at the press conference which occurred shortly before the team’s final preseason game against Emirates Club. O’Brien said he is pleased to continue to work with a sponsor as prominent as Emirates.

“We are honored to be associated with such a world-class brand,” O’Brien said. “This agreement underlines how much both organizations value this relationship and the new deal reaffirms Emirates’ belief in what we are trying to achieve at the Cosmos.”

Pele added that Emirates has played a vital role in the Cosmos’ revival to this point and is glad that the airline will still be involved with the club.

The Cosmos ended their preseason trip to Dubai with a 2–1 loss to Emirates and will begin their regular season at Hofstra in a rematch against last year’s Soccer Bowl opponent, the Atlanta Silverbacks on April 13th.

  • Where does this deal rank with other American Soccer teams atm ? Is there anyone else beside maybe the Galaxy who get sponsorship money like this ?

    • Compared to MLS teams, probably last.

      • ok thx , has to be up there in terms of shirt sponsors i would guess.

It was already $1 million per year in sponsorship revenue; plus as we see with a paid for trip to Dubai in preseason also included perks, not to mention whatever global influence Emirates can wield to help It compares favorably to almost all MLS deals.
