Two time NBA MVP and part owner of the Vancouver Whitecaps Steve Nash is making his annual trip to Sara D. Roosevelt Park, teaming once again with Claudio Reyna to bring you downtown Manhattans premiere soccer charity game, “Showdown In Chinatown.”
Going on it’s fourth year, “Showdown” brings together the best in basketball, soccer and entertainment and pits them on the pitch to benefit the Steve Nash Foundation. Some big names already confirmed for the game include Tony Parker (San Antonio Spurs), Grant Hill (Phoenix Suns), Brandon Jennings (Milwaukee Bucks), Jared Dudley (Phoenix Suns), Claudio Reyna (Former USA World Cup team captain), Marcin Gortat (Phoenix Suns) and West Ham’s top scorer this season, Demba Ba.
Past participants have included some big names as well, including Thierry Henry, Steve McManaman, Robbie Fowler, Raja Bell, Jozy Altidore, Baron Davis, Soloman Kalou, Juan Pablo Angel, Edgar Davids, Ryan Babel, Javier Zanetti, Adrian Mutu, Chris Bosh, Nate Robinson, Giusseppe Rossi and various others. The New York Red Bulls have also participated in past events with Richie Williams, Sinisa Ubiparipovic, Jeremy Hall and Danleigh Borman all representing the club at one point or another.
Now, for those that have never attended the ‘Showdown,’ the event always makes for a fun evening, with an unlikely face or two stealing the show. NBA star Baron Davis was the talk of the game in 2008, having fun while looking like a complete novice on the ball. 2009, it was all about little Nate Robinson, just traded to the Celtics, and relishing his moment back in New York. Or look back to last year, when mercurial footballer Giusseppe Rossi actually had a cheering contingent in the stands supporting the Italian American stars every move. Even ESPN’s Marc Stein has gotten into the mix, huffing and puffing up and down the field for a good cause.
Who else will be joining Nash and friends this year? Well, there is only one way to find out. The game is June 22nd at 6pm sharp, rain or shine, in Chinatown’s Sara D. Roosevelt Park. Following the game, Nash and friends will roll out the red carpet for the “Showdown After Hours” live auction event. Proceeds from both events will go to benefit the Steve Nash Foundation.
