Strong draft for NYCFC, pick up Shelton, Brandt

New York City FC have proven quite able in maneuvering about the various MLS draft structures, and the SuperDraft was no different.

With the second pick, NYCFC chose the most MLS-ready forward of the 2015 class — 6’3″ Oregon State product, Khiry Shelton.

“To represent the light blue will be fantastic,” Shelton said after his selection.  “I couldn’t be more excited.”

The reigning Pac-12 Player of the Year is a towering presence with a capable scoring touch, netting 10 goals and 12 assists in 21 games for Oregon last year.  He will serve as a game-ready option for head coach Jason Kreis at forward, with the possibility of minutes alongside legendary Spanish scorer, David Villa.

“I didn’t really anticipate anything. Didn’t know what to expect.  I am very thankful for that and blessed,” he said.  “To see everybody, to get with the team, everyone is new so just to get with a team and an organization and meet everyone personally and the other stuff comes later.”

The second round pick went to midfielder Connor Brandt out of the University of San Diego.  The reigning WCC Player of the Year joins a quickly crowding midfield, headlined by Frank Lampard and Mix Diskerud.  He scored seven goals and assisted six in 21 games last season.

    Isn’t NYCFC just DREAMY? (sigh)!!!

Connor Brandt can play left back as well and try to unseat Chris Wingert.
