Former USMNT star and current New England Revolution forward Charlie Davies has announced that he has been battling liposarcoma; a rare cancer that grows within fat cells inside the body’s soft tissue.

Davies learned of his diagnosis in the spring. However, good news has surfaced as it was announced that his cancer is currently in remission.

The New Hampshire native has not appeared in a Major League Soccer match since April 27th due to a right adductor strain. Davies resumed training on July 13 but has yet to appear in a match since then for the Revolution.

Since the beginning of his prolific soccer career, Davies hasn’t been too unfamiliar with difficult times. Back in 2010 when he was coming off of an enjoyable campaign with the United State’s Men’s National Team, Davies was hit in a car accident that left him in terrible physical shape, forcing him to sit out from soccer for nearly 18 months.

Thankfully, the striker was able to return to the game, but the hardships wouldn’t end there. Back in the spring, Davies and his wife had to face the difficult challenge of having their twin sons born three months prematurely as well, nearly coinciding with the cancer diagnosis.

Davies has been quiet about his difficulties this year with the public. However, he is set to open up about everything in a feature on Fox Sports tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. ET.

Here is a message he shared via Twitter on the experience:

The New England Revolution also added a statement regarding Davies’ return to health:

Today, New England Revolution forward Charlie Davies shared that earlier this spring he was diagnosed and treated for liposarcoma and that he is now in remission. It was important for Charlie to concentrate on his family and treatment during the past few weeks and the club honored his wish for privacy. The New England Revolution will continue to support him through full recovery and are looking forward to seeing him back out on the pitch.
