Cosmos target Dutch int’l Demy de Zeeuw, Finland’s Lagerblom

Demy de Zeeuw Cosmos Spartak Moscow

While all eyes have been on Raul, the New York Cosmos have also been working on other player transactions.

One such target is former Dutch international, Demy de Zeeuw.  The 31-year-old former Spartak Moscow midfielder finds himself without a side after an unsuccessful stint in Russia.  That has brought him to New York in search of a footballing future with the Cosmos.

De Zeeuw has been training with the club this week, but the Cosmos are not viewing it as a trial.  Both parties are well aware of the NASL’s roster freeze for 2014, making any negotiations focused on the coming 2015 campaign.  De Zeeuw is an interesting candidate for the Cosmos in an already deep midfield.  Marcos Senna’s contract runs through the middle of 2015. The veteran Dutchman would make for a logical transition as the Cosmos new box-to-box midfielder.  His experience will also be a boon for this young side, with a resume including championships with Ajax and AZ along with a World Cup run in 2010.

De Zeeuw is the second player negotiation to come to light over the past several weeks.  While the team’s chase of Raul remains well documented, head coach Giovanni Savarese also revealed a failed bid to secure Finnish international Pekka Lagerblom.  Lagerblom, 31, nearly found himself in Cosmos green, but an undisclosed ITC issue prevented the player from joining the Fall campaign.

“He did well when he came to practice,” Savarese said. “He did well the few days he was here.”

According to Savarese, the Cosmos will “definitely” contact Lagerblom for the 2015 season as well.

No way they bring these type of guys in if they continue at Hofstra. Something tells me they will be breaking ground in 2015 !

Looks like the NY Cosmos are making a move to rebuild a top caliber international squad. They have a really good team right now. These additional players can be a bonus.

There’s something fishy about this cosmos, will they get their own stadium or take over red bull arena. It just doesn’t make sense to invest in a new stadium when red bull have no future and can be bought.
We also gotta realize MLS won’t stop at 24 teams and not all NASL teams will build a SSS just for NASL.

Cosmos wont buy NYRB-thats a fantasy that’ll never happen and not worth talking about. They will get their stadium built and if not in Belmont then they have a plan b and c at other sites. These 2 players would be a very good addition to the Cosmos for 2015. The team should refrain from taking loans of mls players, its beneath them.
