HARRISON, N.J. – New York Red Bull II had some familiar faces join their cause at Red Bull Arena.

Oft-injured defender Ronald Zubar, fullback Roy Miller and forward Anatole Abang joined the Red Bull reserves during a 1-1 result against the Charlotte Independence.

“The mixing in of the first team players was tricky,” NYRBII head coach John Wolyniec said after the match. ”

Zubar, who has spent most of the year as an injured reserve for the senior team, earned 35 minutes of starting time before being spelled by James Thomas. It is the latest step towards recovery for the veteran defender.

“He has had a tough go,” Wolyniec said of Zubar. “We felt it was important to get some minutes. It’s not ideal for him to get 30 minutes in a first team game, so the next best case is the second team, build him up a little bit. I thought it was a success.

“It’s tricky. You have a guy who has an injury that was re-injured. You want to be cautious. You don’t want him to go backwards again. One of the important parts of this team is to do that, to give a guy like Ronald or Roy managed minutes and give them that half step towards returning to the first team.”

Roy Miller played 45 minutes before making way for Colin Heffron — his first club minutes since June 21st against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Former NYRBII fixture Anatole Abang played 66 minutes before being subbed out for Chris Tsonis.

  • Keep Zubar & Miller…

… with the baby bulls. Neither belong in MLS. The USL is perfect for them.
