Terry Byrne, Joe Fraga Reveal N.Y. Cosmos Plans, Including PDL Team, In Online Q&A

Terry Byrne, VP, New York Cosmos

New York Cosmos Vice President Terry Byrne and Executive Director Joe Fraga hosted an online Q&A this afternoon, addressing questions from the general soccer public. Though plenty of the answers given were of the stock, ambiguous business variety, a few points did manage to raise a few eye brows, especially when pertaining to the future of the New York Cosmos as an on the pitch product.

Here are some of the highlights:

On The Upcoming Acquisition Of A PDL Side:

“In regards to the PDL team, We are in the process of finalizing the agreement with USL and we are planning on making an announcement in the next two weeks.”

“We are discussing as we speak several options to coach the PDL team. We hope to announce the coach as the same time frame as the PDL team.”

On where the team will play: “We are currently working on this. The venue will be part of the upcoming announcement.”

“The PDL team is so that our college age kids can continue to play in the Cosmos system and our younger academy kids can play with college level talent.”

On Creating A Team Roster:

“Our priority is to develop our own players, so whatever league we are in the core of our team will be based around our academy players.”

“We have invested in our academies in the last year to develop individual players and a style of play with Eric Cantona and Cobi Jones working closely with Gio Savarese and Teddy to nurture the future of The New York Cosmos.”

“If we do our job correctly, the core of our players will be from our academy.”

“Our intentions are to develop home grown academy players that will be the future backbone of The Cosmos team however soccer as a business always unearths special talent that at some point will attract global attention. Should we receive that level of attention with any of our players in the future we will consider whats best for both the player and The New York Cosmos.”

On The Cosmos 40th Anniversary Celebration And Possible Friendly Match

“We are currently exploring our options for playing a match this year which would be part of our 40th anniversary celebrations.”

“We are currently working on a strategy for games this year and over the coming weeks and months there will be regular announcements.”

“The plan is to have legendary Cosmos players at our event. We are talking with all our former legendary players.”

On A Possible Stadium

“We are looking within New York City’s five boroughs.”

“We are working closely with our architects and construction company on all these matters.” (a hint that a possible area has been identified?)

“Our plan is to have the most iconic soccer specific stadium in this country that caters to all our fans. Our hope is to secure a ground in excess of a 30k capacity. “

Will There Be An Issue With Umbro If Cosmos Does In Fact Join MLS?

“All parties are aware of our ambitions to become a club in MLS.”

On The Viability Of New York Hosting Another Professional Soccer Team

Our conversations to date with both MLS and the Red Bulls representatives are welcoming the opportunity to create a rivalry in New York. If you look at Los Angeles, there are currently two teams, in Chivas USA and the Los Angeles Galaxy, and if you look at most soccer cities around the world there are normally more than one team which creates these historical soccer rivalries.
