New York Red Bull II made their first journey away from Red Bull Arena on Saturday night and earned a 1-1 draw against the high powered Charleston Battery offense at Blackbaud Stadium.

The score opened towards the end of the first half when midfielder Jose Rodriguez sent a looping ball past goalkeeper Rafael Diaz. Much of the same back and forth play continued in the second half when Red Bull first team bench striker Anatole Abang squared away the equalizer in the 68th minute from a Sean Davis set piece.

The first half was high tempo from both teams with a plethora of opportunities on either end. At times, it appeared that New York was being overwhelmed but would counter with strong opportunities of their own.

The opening goal served as a reminder of the Battery’s offensive capabilities. Rodriguez’s 44th minute goal came after a lackluster set piece was cleared, finding the foot of the midfielder for the finish.

The second half saw much of the same with New York giving as good as they got. While the Battery managed to hit woodwork in the 64th minute, the junior Red Bulls found the finish to seal the match. Sean Davis and Anatole Abang both sat on the bench just one night earlier at Red Bull Arena, with Davis even seeing a few minutes towards the end of the game with the first team. Both proved to be the deciding factor as Abang headed a Davis set piece into the back of the net straight through the Battery defense.

New York will not have much time to rest as they will make the trip home to play the Richmond Kickers Wednesday night at Red Bull Arena.
