HARRISON, NJ – The New York Red Bulls capped off a busy Monday with a D.P. signing — just not the kind you would expect.

French defender Damien Perrinelle — initials D.P. — trialed with the club through July and has earned himself a contract with the club. It is the second time in two years that Perrinelle has tried out for the club.

“We’re very pleased to add Damien to our roster following a successful trial period with the club.” Red Bulls sporting director Andy Roxburgh said in a statement. “He’s a versatile defender with good technical quality and he’ll add depth to our squad.”

Perrinelle, 30, is a career Ligue 2 player, most recently appearing with F.C. Istres as a spot starter. He joined the now-relegated Istres from Clermont where he appeared in 103 matches, scoring three goals and earning 14 yellow cards as the club’s centerback. Perrinelle can play on either side of centre half, and can also perform as a right fullback and right midfielder.

The French defender comes on at a key time for the Red Bulls. New York have had difficulty finding a steady centerback option alongside Jamison Olave since the departure of Markus Holgersson. Perrinelle, who was also targeted by two other MLS clubs, will be key in shoring up their backline issues.

Not even close to a 3rd DP.
