U.S. Crashes Out of World Cup


Russia logoNeeding only a draw, the United States men’s national team played one of its worst games in recent memory falling to Trinidad and Tobago, 2–1. With Honduras and Panama both winning their games, the United States failed to qualify for next year’s World Cup in Russia.

An Omar Gonzalez own goal and an Alvin Jones goal proved to be the difference as Tim Howard was left flat-footed and fooled, the American defense stunned. Christian Pulisic pulled one back minutes into the second half but as Honduras and Panama rallied to secure glory, the United States relied on veterans who could not produce in the critical moment. Bobby Wood nearly saved the Americans but his header was saved with minutes to spare.

The embarrassing evening means a string of seven consecutive World Cup appearances is over. An eternal discussion of what went wrong and how can it be corrected begins. Now
