U.S. to play Guatemala in Gold Cup tune-up

ussoccerlogoIn need of some action prior to their Gold Cup run, U.S. Soccer has added a friendly against Guatemala to their list of fixtures.

The teams will meet July 5 in San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium – four days prior to their Cup opener against Belize.

“This is a very important opportunity for us to get in a good game before the start of the Gold Cup,” said U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann. “It is our goal to win the tournament, and the chance to play Guatemala will be good preparation for our group. We are thrilled to get back to San Diego which has such an outstanding soccer tradition.”

The U.S. faced Guatemala twice last year – once in Guatemala City, and once on U.S. soil. The team went 1-0-1 against Los Chapines, outscoring their opponents 4-1. Historically, the U.S. holds a series advantage against their southern rivals as well, going 13-4-6 against Guatemala since 1977.

The Yanks are undefeated against Los Chapines all time, holding an impressive 11-0-1 record.
