The New York Cosmos added another piece of silverware Saturday night at Shuart Stadium in an intense 3-3 draw against the Jacksonville Armada.

An own goal forced by a Raúl wonder strike, a brilliant piece of individual skill by Hagop Chirshian and a late finish by Lucky Mkosana would be enough to bring New York their third trophy since the start of the ‘reboot’ era.

The Cosmos influenced the game from the opening whistle by pressing the Jacksonville Armada and forcing them into mistakes. In the 5th minute, the home side created the first dangerous opportunity of the night off a Danny Szetela cross. His ball found Sebastian Guenzatti, whose effort from point blank range went straight to the keeper.

The first goal of the night was a thing of beauty, courtesy of Raúl. Off a failed Armada clearance, the ball found its way to the Real Madrid legend. From about 30 yards out, the striker effortlessly chipped the ball. The strike would hit the cross bar and went straight down to the ground. It then deflected off the Jacksonville Armada goalie Miguel Gallardo into the back of the net to give the Cosmos an early 1-0 lead after 6 minutes of play.

The goal would later be officially ruled an own goal.

In the 11th minute, the Cosmos almost got their second of the night off a counter attack, but a late slide by Guenzatti kept the score line the same. Jacksonville had their first real opportunity of the night minutes later off a shot that barely troubled Jimmy Mauer.

In the 26th minute, the Cosmos continued to show their class adding another beautiful goal by Hagop Chirishian. The play began with a searching ball by Danny Szetela that found Chirishian a half-step ahead of the Jacksonville backline. The California native flicked the service just over the keeper, and finished the opportunity with great composure to make it 2-0 in favor of New York.

Jacksonville enjoyed more possession in the last 20 minutes of the first half, but Gio Savarese’s side went into the locker room with a comfortable 2-0 lead.

To start the second half the teams traded opportunities, with the Armada looking the more impressive of the two sides.

Their momentum would lead to an opportunity and a goal for the Jacksonville Armada in the 59th minute. A sloppy period in the midfield for both sides saw Jacksonville’s Pascal Millien obtain possession. The Armada playmaker dribbled through a couple of Cosmos players before getting to the edge of the area. After a deflection and a great combination, Millien was in on goal, beating Mauer to cut the Cosmos lead to 2-1 with a half hour to go.

The match went from bad to worse in the 73rd minute. A poor distribution from Mauer to Szetela led to the Clifton native giving away the ball under very little pressure. Pascal Millien picked Szetela’s pocket and scored from the top of the box to level up the match.

Just as the Cosmos faithful began to doubt the result and the impending Spring Championship, Lucky Mksosana got on the end of a David Diosa cross to put the Cardiac Cosmos up 3-2 in the 86th minute. However, the celebration would be short lived, as a Jacksonville’s Joseph Toby converted a stunning inside-of-the-foot volley into the top right corner to level things in the shadow of extra time.

After a few perilous chances by the visitors, the final whistle blew and a collective sigh of relief was felt all over Shuart Stadium as the New York Cosmos finished as undefeated champions of the 2015 Spring Season.

The Cosmos will face their biggest test of this calendar year when they host NYCFC Wednesday night at Shuart Stadium.
