Union rally draws big numbers in support of Cosmos’ Belmont Stadium

Cosmos Union Rally

by DAVE MARTINEZ

Two weeks ago, Nassau County Legislator Carrie Solages drew a dozen supporters in opposition of the proposed New York Cosmos’ stadium.

This week, stadium supporters out did that – twelve fold.

According to multiple reports, including  Newsday and This Is Cosmos Country, some 150-200 union members, business owners, fans and supporters gathered at an overcast Belmont Park on Tuesday evening in a show of support for the Elmont Town Crossings project.

“Over 20 politicians have been supportive of this project. The community is supportive of this project,” Long Island Federation of Labor President Fred Durso said. “All of us in labor are supportive of this project.

“It’s time for the governor and the Empire State Development Corporation to get off the dime, get this project going, and get us to work!”

The Cosmos submitted a bid for an open State RFP in 2013, offering a comprehensive $400 million redevelopment plan that included a 175-room hotel, park land, a restaurant row and, at the heart of it all, a 25,000 seat soccer stadium. The Cosmos revised their bid this winter after the Empire State Development Corporation removed a parcel of the land from the project. Now, the restaurant row has made way for 300,000 sqft. of retail space, including a movie theater, attached to the stadium.

Moreover, the club continues to tout private finance backing the project if awarded the bid.

After three long years, ESD spokesman Jonah Bruno tells Newsday that the agency was “re-engaging respondents in order to obtain the best possible deal for the state.” Still, there is no timeline for the decision.

The Cosmos are one of four bidders for the project. Other interested parties include the Bluemenfeld Development Group, the Engel Burman Group, the Basser-Kaufman group and Related Companies.

As TICC reports, Stover took to the megaphone to address the throng of supporters and offering a bright view of what their bid can accomplish.

“Yes, we want a stadium, but it’s a lot more than that,” he said. “We’re talking about a 175-room hotel, nine restaurants, over 300,000 square feet of retail, a movie theater; this will be a destination 365 days a year, not just 40 or 50 soccer games.

“Across the street, that track is almost empty. We do this here, it’ll fill back up again. We do this here, there’ll be more jobs. More jobs means more housing in the community, more redevelopment, but we have to start here.”

  • The rock

It looks like nycfc might get a new temporary field and cosmos stadium is looking more like a reality.
I wonder what garber is thinking ?

    • Philip

It will be great for the game and NASL if they get this done but I’m not sure if Garber cares.

      • The rock

Trust me, garber does care. Nycfc is so rich they would buy red bull arena or pay rent at cosmos new stadium.
To mancity owners they wouldn’t care about playing at cosmos stadium, soccer teams share stadiums, but garber does care.
Red bull is up to something by getting stadium naming rights.

        • DanGerman

IF this stadium happens it would be awesome but the location would be to far for NYCFC’s current fan base so that’s not happening. Personally I don’t see Albany approving the Cosmos bid they’re attendance is a HUGE red flag, and nobody’s going to approve a plan that may kill their career down the road.

          • The rock

You never know, but let’s say nycfc plays there, adding 17 more games plus exhibition games.
Summer European exhibition games, summer concerts, USA national games, winter classic, college soccer games. That’s a lot of games if u ask me.

            • DanGerman

Why would NYCFC move to the boonies when they have a serviceable stadium currently? Moving out to Elmont would hurt attendance numbers as it would suddenly make it inconvenient to go to games. I just don’t see it happening.

              • Ty/s

I got to agree with you here. NYCFC is a Yankees organization. Why would they move? They get pretty good attendance and their fans don’t mind being treated like “herded cattle”. As long as they’re getting their fans pay they will always be at Yankee stadium

                • DanGerman

When you get a lot of people in one place they effect is similar to “herded cattle”(Ride the subway much?). I would hope one day the Cosmos can “herd their fans into a stadium” so far that is not the case. I heard the VP of ticketing got fired recently and deservedly so. They need to refocus the marketing as its been pretty non existent so far.

                • Larry\’s A Simpleton

herded cattle? lol. things kind of get tight when theres 25ooo or more at a stadium. fortunately thats something you f.cosmos fanboys will never have to deal with. must be a snap to get in and out of shuart because theres only a couple of thousand peeps.

                  • Ty/s

I think I’d rather fade away than proclaim myself “BIG TIME” when the reality of the situation is that you’re a “charity case” for Manchester CIty. NYCFC is just an excuse for CFG to sell more Man city jerseys. Like Burger King. Yeah there’s one in Melbourne “CITY” and another “CITY” coming to china

                    • Larry\’s A Simpleton

charity case? lol. man city invested money because unlike the f.cosmos, nycfc has a nice roi.

thousands of tickets sold, merchandise sales, tv deals etc.

all things the f.cosmos arent getting and never will get. but hey lets keep pretending the future of the game depends on a steaming pile of **** like the f.cosmos. its cute.

                    • Smurf040

Dude, What good is all that if the product on the field sucks!!!! NYCfc sucks big elephant balls!!! Please don’t tell me you can actually seat down and watch a bunch of kicking and running around like chickens without a head? Please tell me you have some kind of life?? Even fat ass Lampard can’t stand that team!!! He’s doing his darnest not to wear that shirt and take the field! Lol!!!!

                  • Smurf040

Keep Yapping lover boy Larry!!!! The irony here is, it looks like the “Mankees” could very well be paying for this whole project by renting to the Cosmos!!! Man, if there’s a God, please let this happen!!! I would like nothing more for NYCfc fans to walk into that stadium and revere all that history!! Yeah boy!!!!!! Let’s make this happen!!!

        • MTF

Several times you have posted that NYCFC might pay rent at a future Cosmos stadium (if Garber allows it) or they’ll buy Red Bull Arena. On what basis do you post such ridiculous sounding nonsense? The Cosmos will or won’t win the bid for Belmont. If they don’t they are going to have to look for a Plan B location and probably go smaller…or fold the franchise. NYCFC will find land for a stadium eventually, although it wouldn’t surprise me if they play at Yankee Stadium for the next 5-10 years. Red Bull is up to something with selling the stadium naming rights…it’s called further monetizing an asset they already own. Why not make some bucks? I’ve seen no indications that Red Bull is ready to divest themselves of their MLS team, stadium, training facility, or academy. It’s the future of the Cosmos I’d worry about. Their attendance is abysmal.

          • Leo Glickman

As much as it may hurt me to say it, MTF is totally correct here.

            • The only garber

              How can u:) jk
Well yes, eventually nycfc will get their land but like in 5 years or 3 and if cosmos get their stadium, nycfc would actually give it a try.
Nycfc will get tired of Yankee stadium and ask for a better stadium sooner than later but you never know.
It’s all about the money and politics, so let’s hope nycfc and cosmos get their stadium and red bull gets a reality check.
Who gets their stadium first? Sounders or nycfc.

          • Philip

I can see the Cosmos playing temporarily at MCU stadium in Brooklyn until they find a better situation. If they play there they can at least sell beer and it would be more convenient for fans in the five boroughs. And yeah I agree with everything you said regarding NYCFC, I’m going to be going there for quite sometime. Red Bull is doing well with their academy, they’ve produced some great young players and they have no reason to stop.

            • MTF

To me, best case, the Cosmos eventually find some land in Brooklyn or Queens (although for my own convenience I’d prefer Nassau County) and build an expandable 10-12K seater. They get a thriving academy going and get their average attendance to 6-8K. The Red Bulls are all set in Harrison / Newark, with a great academy, terrific facilities, and an attendance floor of about 15K. They need to continue making inroads to the local community and bump up their ‘true’ attendance to 18-20K. NYCFC needs to build in upper Manhattan, the Bronx or Westchester. I’d like to see three strong teams with healthy rivalries and nice geographic separation but covering the entire Metro area.

              • Philip

The Cosmos are going to have as much trouble building in the five boroughs as NYCFC so if it isn’t Elmont it has to be somewhere else in Nassau bit within a reasonable distance of the L.I.R.R.. But I’ve heard until that stadium happens they want out of Hofstra and I can’t say I blame them so unti then MCU is a good place to build the fan base . They did well there last summer. 10 to 12 k is good for now I think. I would love to see them fill a 25k stadium every night but am having trouble envisioning it.
NYCFC have made it known that they are only interested in the five boroughs so Westchester is out. They could have already been there if they wanted. I know whenever they find a stadium it’s going to have been worth the wait.

I would love for the rivalry to become as big as what they have in the Pacific Northwest.

                • Larry\’s A Simpleton

they did well at mcu? they didnt sell out either match at an 8ooo seat stadium and one was a semi final playoff game. then again the 5000 people they got in brooklyn is better than the 2ooo they get at hofstra

      • Smurf040

Yeah, Ok! You’re right Philip, he doesn’t care that a rival 2nd division team is going to have a state of the art SSS stadium but his “major league” franchise plays in a baseball field!! You’re right, He could care less!! Smh!!!

    • Smurf040

That bold headed stooge is sweating bullets!! He knows if the Cosmos get that real state, He’ll have two choices, eat crow and rent to Cosmos or get a stadium IN THE CITY, as soon as possible and we all know what a headache that is.

      • slowleftarm

Oh yeah, the global brand and their dozens of fans will really scare everyone. So scary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Rui

If I knew this was going on, I would’ve been there.

  • Greenback Gary

If any of the politicians in office were understudies of Sheldon Silver, could be a good possobility they are waiting for a bribe before they approve. The area is a sh*thole and has been for years courtesy of same clowns that should be approving any deal.

  • rebel fighter

Ok. So the Cosmos just increased their attendance with 200 union labor workers. We are now 3,200 strong. The Elmont/Cosmos site will be the new Newark Bears stadium with weak attendance. I am convinced that the current Cosmos ownership is at a loss on what to do to get people to the stadium. If the LIRR isn’t getting folks to the game the latest push and solution from the Cosmos office is Uber. I can’t see Uber as a viable option, unless the plans are to move to Mitchell Field next year. Do that and it will fail.

Please stop with Cosmos One World Sports commercial with the ariel view of the city. That’s fine for folks that don’t live or understand NY. Most of the Cosmos off field activities are Long Island.based. So why not highlight Long Island, the light houses, the beaches etc… Dave, please on a future green podcast interview someone from the Cosmos marketing Depmartment..

    • Ty/s

That’s assuming that the Cosmos want to appeal to the “New” New Yorker. Your average Brooklyn Hipster. If I’m the Cosmos, I would appeal to more “Authentic” fanbase. Jamaica and Queens village have a huge Caribbean,Hispanic, and African population. St Albans has potential also.

      • slowleftarm

Cosmos core fanbase is people old enough to remember the old Cosmos who remember it fondly and, therefore, will follow this minor league team because they have the same logo and name. I suppose it’s also children of these people who have no choice but to come along to the game.

        • slowlefttroll

You ‘suppose’ a lot. Do you actually, ummm, ‘know’ anything?

          • slowleftarm

I “know” that you can’t rebut any of the factual statements I make so you resort to personal attacks or question why I post at all. Pretty transparent.

            • Larry\’s A Simpleton

f.cosmos fanboys just cant deal with facts so i wouldnt take anything they say to personally.

              • Ty/s

Larry You and Slow are the persistent trolls in the history of US soccer. I don’t even know what clubs you guys support but i know what club you “hate”.

                • Smurf040

Those two clowns are more concerned about the Cosmos than their own team!! Can it be that they find their loser team so boring that they have have to criticize the 7 times!! NASL champions and that’s one tittle you can’t take that away from them! And that’s what’s killing them!! Why do you think they always bring the attendance issue all the time??? Not once do they bring up the quality of play on the field??? That’s because their team hasn’t won crap!!!! And please, oh please don’t bring up those two SS. Fans want Championships!!!!!! The Mets won the National league division last year, guess what, they fell one series short!!!

              • William

hahaahahahahahahahahaha larry the loser aka slow ahahahahahahahahahaa

                #LARRYTHELOON

think the f.cosmos will get more than 1000 at the next home matcH?

                  • Smurf040

You think NYCfc is going to win another game??? Lol!

            • William

Right why do you post at a rate of 20 posts for the Cosmos and 1/2 of a post for the Harrison Metrostars ? never can answer that question can u ? yes lets talk about the facts can we ? Metrostars or the NY NJ Metrostars or the Harrison Redbulls whatever they are called have never won a championship and that is a FACT. Thanks again slow larry its really the same person.

              #MLSISMINORLEAGUESOCCER

              • slowleftarm

Nah, you can see my style and Larry’s are different and we support different teams. But we both enjoy riling up the Cosmos fanboys. It’s fun and easy.

                • William

same style to me why don’t u post under one name ? Riling up ahhahahhahahaa take a seat littleman hhahahahahah peewee

                • Larry\’s A Simpleton

lol at angry bill. he would **** his pants if we could ever prove we’re not the same guy. i thought martinez was supposed to set this place up so trolls like onionsack-jsprech-opencup couldnt pose as dupes?

f.cosmos fans are such an angry bunch. i guess theyre just totally embarrassed about what goes on out there at the lacrosse stadium.

              • Smurf040

Hey, hey, now William at least the Redbulls have won two meaningless SS. Unlike another team around here that are happy winning 4 games a season!!! Lol!!!

        • Greg

And how old are these “children” that are forced to come along with their old, original Cosmos fans, parents? Mid 30s, at least? If you’re going to troll, do it right.
I hope you got a good look at the NJ Third Rail flag, last home game, in our supporters section. In case you were wondering why RBA attendance is low – we have your fans that jumped ship.
I hope the Cosmos get this stadium. I like the idea of NYC being divided to support these 2 teams. We all know Jersey is red.

          • slowleftarm

Greg – did they manage to hold that flag right side up? I know you guys have struggled with that.

I’m a Yankee fan and I go to probably 10 games a year from NJ. It’s a pain in the ass to get there. If people want to make that trip to see Pirlo stroll around a baseball stadium, go for it! Besides, attendance at RBNY last year wasn’t any lower than pre-NYCFC so I think you’re wrong about that. Real fans don’t switch teams.

            • William

You will be switching soon my friend. I sense it.

          • Jerseys not all Red. Im a die hard Cosmos fan that lives far down the shore. . Go Cosmos

            • slowleftarm

You are one of the few but you’re right generally. There are also plenty of RBNY fans in the city.

              • William

Like Where dude stop spreading lies and inaccurate information. You are ZERO PRESENCE ! just because some guy in Sweden knows of the Metrostars doesn’t mean the Harrison side is a global WORLD RENOWED SOCCER POWER.

  • Sunil & Cher

Soccer in america did not exist before sunil and I. We are the only ones that can build stadiums and run leagues.
Our deep undersfanding of soccer and the hipster community in second to none.

    • Sunil

We also believe in womens soccer getting us great tv deals. The power of MLS!!!!!
