Labor unions, politicians rally for Cosmos Stadium

With the New York Cosmos stadium bid on life support, labor leaders and local politicians gathered in force to give the project a very visible push.

Nearly 200 people gathered Thursday afternoon at Belmont Racetrack lot 5 to show their support for the New York Cosmos “Elmont Town Crossing” stadium bid; a $400 million dollar, privately financed proposal that promises redevelopment in the Belmont area including restaurants, park land — and a 25,000 seat stadium.

“I’ve represented this Elmont community over five years,” State Senator Jack Martins told Newsday. “And if there is one thing we need, it’s opportunities … the opportunity to put a $400 million investment into the ground here at Elmont, build the stadium, build the retail, but create jobs and great opportunities … it’s a homerun.”

Councilman Gregory Meeks recently cast a shadow on the Cosmos proposal, revealing the Empire State Development Corp., the organization charged with vetting bidders in this case, had begun talks to possibly rebid the three-year old RFP. The Cosmos, along with fellow bidders Blumenfeld Development Group and Engel Burman Group, have been in the dark over the entire bidding process since submitting their original proposals in January of 2013. Due to stringent bidding rules, none of the three candidates has been allowed to interact with ESD during this process.

Since then, the future of the entire bid has remained unclear.

According to Meeks, the decision to re-open the bidding could come “somewhere between now and the beginning of 2016.”

200 people is a good turn out. It is more then we get at Hofstra. #weareinnasl #notindependent #ilikehashtags #showsimsmart

    • slowleftarm

True, although most likely the union paid most of those folks to show up. Maybe if Cosmos pay people to come to games, they’ll get bigger crowds.

Omg, I love that an mls fan keeps hijacking a name that talks about hm being a SUCKER, love it.
      .
      Keep it up #bushleaguemlsbots !

      • REAL OpenCupFan Knows msl fans are Suckers

We are in NASL,we are not local independent soccer club. We have trillions. I don’t even realize this guy is making fun of me and I still use hashtags #bigtimeloser #notindependent #ikissboys #cosmosbots #hashtags #ilovehashtags

        • REAL OpenCupFan Knows mls fans are Suckers

You’re making fun of me by calling yourself a sucker?
          .
Lol, great joke, keep it up, I’m literally laughing out loud right now – lol, good stuff, – hard to believe someone with smarts is a mls fan.
          .
Omg, you’re a sucker, jokes on me! Omg so funny, you guys would be better if you didn’t say anything at all

          • BleedingRed

Aww he stopped using hashtags. Maybe he’s starting to feel self-conscious. I think I see him blushing.

Don’t worry friend, nobody’s really looking at you anyway.

  • Larry’s a Simpleton

You know that dream where a naked Don Garber lays next to you in bed… I think it’s real.

I really don’t get the hate for this location from “some” Cosmos fans. As if getting closer to the city is even possible. This is on the Cross Island Pkwy. It’s not that bad easy access to Upper Manhattan,Bronx and even Westchester via Throgs neck. On the border of Queens and Nassau. We should start playing in the AM because traffic is nothing at that hour. I

    • Mike

I’m guessing most of the people complaining are mainly hoping for a stadium accessible via the subway or a NYC bus route, probably from Brooklyn, Manhattan, or western Queens. Nassau and Suffolk are very car-centric (and it’s only getting more so) so it’s easy for us to think in terms of, “Take this bridge/highway and go here,” but I imagine the NYC mass transit commuter has a different perspective.

      • ty

Well that would be even more reason for them to open the LIRR route back up that goes to Belmont Park. Instead of being seasonal win win.

  • Mike

Good! I’m glad some local clout is starting to push back, because those comments from Meeks and other NY pols stank of favoritism and corruption. (Seriously. I’m guessing they’re suddenly now talking of re-opening the bid because that bid for a casino in Westbury was nixed.)

I use hashtags. makes me cool. Hashtags, hashtags, Caitlyn Jenner NASL. Cosmos are in the NASL, not an independent local soccer club. You are such a loser. Let me guess, acne scarred, never played sports, maybe JV soccer. Go to Hofstra to watch games by yourself. Try and say the Cosmos are the same Cosmos that played in NJ with Pele? Yup, pinned it you little girl wimp. Oh, and you say bot a lot. I’m literally laughing with all my friends (you have none) at what a loser you are. Bots, hashtags, independent. You can’t even be a gay boy because you can’t pick up guys either. Let me guess, no plans for Halloween? Yup, just you and hashtags, bots and independent. Loser.

      BleedingRed – here’s your friend. Found’im

    • Guy Blades

That’s an awful lot of gay references in one post. As a gay man myself, I think you’re not so much making fun of Real Open Cup fan as trying to come out of the closet. And it’s ok. We all accept you. Just be true to yourself.

  • Cosmo

Nice job from the union but we know how it is, money talks and corruption as well.
Cosmos deserve their stadium, they have the money and plan.
For now all we can do is wait.

    • Cosmo

By the way are the cosmos getting jermaine jones

      • slowleftarm

They’re trying to get him. Of course they’ll have to pay him way more than MLS was – i.e. a minor league premium. Plus, he’ll be suspended for their first few games.

        • Cosmo

I’m just tired of ligaMX and Tijuana getting good American talent.
Tijuana is about to get flea Herrera and JJ, wow.
By the way Tijuana is full of dirty money. They own that panhandle if Mexico.

          • slowleftarm

Tijuana can have both of them. They can take turns punching each other.

            • Cosmo

More like drinking and eating tacos.
I wanted Herrera to go to fire or even galaxy if arena would quit or go some where else.

  • Cosmo

    Where’s mr.leo, any inside info.

Btw, did I mention that even though NYCFC’s season is over, we’ll still be holding naked dance parties the 1st saturday of every month through January?

Don’t forget to bring the tapioca!
