Red Bulls logoTickets for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match between the Red Bulls and NYCFC will go on sale to the public on Tuesday, May 30. Members of the Red Bull Red team can obtain their tickets today, May 25. The rivalry between the two local Major League Soccer teams is expected to attract more fans than usually attend Open Cup games.

Red Bulls won a coin flip for the right to host the game, which is the first time the teams will face each other outside league play. NYCFC was ousted from the tournament the past two years by the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League. The Red Bulls have had a similar fate, losing the past two years to the Philadelphia Union. Neither the Red Bulls nor NYCFC has anything to fear this year from the Cosmos, who were bounced out of the tournament last week by Reading United, an amateur club that plays in the Premier Development League.

NYCFC logoIn MLS play, the Red Bulls have dominated the Hudson River Derby with a 5-1-0 record. May 21 marked the one year anniversary of the Red Bulls’ 7-0 trouncing of NYCFC at Yankee Stadium, which has only stoked the rivalry. NYCFC responded a few months later with a 2-0 victory, its first over the Red Bulls.

The U.S. Open Cup is the oldest soccer competition in the United States and includes teams from all levels, including MLS, NASL and the United Soccer League. MLS teams enter in the fourth round, one round after the USL and NASL teams. With games organized by region, NYCFC and the Red Bulls were likely to play each other after the Cosmos’ loss. Neither team has won the competition, though the Red Bulls, then the MetroStars, advanced to the final in 2003.
