USL All-Time Single Season Goalscoring Leader Joins NASL

The Jacksonville Armada of the NASL have swooped in and signed USL single-season goal scoring champion Matt Fondy from Louisville City FC.

The 26-year-old striker not only broke the record for most goals scored in a single USL season, but was also the Golden Boot and Most Valuable Player Award winner in 2015.

“Matt Fondy is a guy who is hungry for goals,” said new Armada head coach and technical director Tony Meola. “He proved last year in the USL that he has a knack for scoring goals by leading the league, and we’re confident that will translate to the NASL and our efforts here in Jacksonville.”

The move is a huge coup for the NASL who swipe one of the most exciting USL players just as the league is pushing for Division 2 status. Fondy’s move also highlights the perception of both leagues as the relationship between MLS and USL was not enough tp keep the star striker in the fold. Louisville City is also seen as one of the more successful independent clubs to come into the USL in recent years. Despite their on-field success and respectable fan base, Fondy found the allure of Jacksonville more appealing.

Overall Fondy may end up playing a significant role in the 2016 season. The Armada released forward Tommy Krizanovic, clearing room on the depth chart up front.

The Armada finished second to last in the 2015 combined table and was second to last in goals scored. Fondy’s addition is an effort to fix the team’s sputtering offense with a proven goal-scorer in the US Soccer pyramid.

Amazing that an article can be written about a player scoring a record number of goals without actually mentioning the number of goals scored or any historical context.
