USL Issues Statement Over Charleston Press Controversy

Blackbaud Stadium: Home of the Charleston Battery

There is some drama brewing in South Carolina.

USL President Jake Edwards released an official statement regarding a contentious situation that saw the Charleston Battery revoke the press credentials of The Charleston Post and Courier.

“After reviewing the situation and discussing it with those involved, the Charleston Battery have agreed to return the credential privileges of The Charleston Post and Courier immediately,” said Edwards through his office. “The USL recognizes the importance of media coverage and reporting and values the media’s position of telling the stories of our players, coaches, teams and the League.”

The situation began when an email was sent by the Post and Courier to the team inquiring about a lawsuit filed against Charleston Battery owner Eric Bowman. The lawsuit involved a Charleston based technology company named SPARC that Bowman started in 2009, but sold in 2015 to Booz Allen Hamilton for $53 million.

The team’s response to these inquiries were to revoke all press credentials from the publication.

Post and Courier Executive Editor Mitch Pugh responded by claiming the publication would no longer cover the team.

“The actions of the team and its owner are unfortunate,” said Pugh. “However, our news coverage cannot and will not be swayed by the withholding of press credentials.”

With tensions rising amongst both sides, Edwards stepped in to mediate the situation.

“The League has spoken to The Charleston Post and Courier to discuss the situation and offer its regrets,” said Edwards. “As one of the League’s oldest franchises, the Charleston Battery and USL have a long relationship with the newspaper and we have always appreciated its coverage of the team and the League.

“We will be taking the appropriate steps to prevent instances like this from happening again.”
