Long the face of the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team, Abby Wambach has always been held up as an example and role model on the team.

However, this latest chapter in her life departs from that narrative.

Wambach was charged Sunday morning in Portland, Oregon with a misdemeanor after failing a sobriety test on site the prior evening. She was pulled over 11PM on Saturday after failing to stop at a red light. According to Wambach, she was pulled over after dinner at a friends house.

This is the first such infraction for the beloved USWNT legend.

Wambach issued an apology for her actions shortly after her arrest.

“Those that know me, know that I have always demanded excellence from myself. I have let myself and others down. I take full responsibility for my actions,” the statement said. “This is all on me. I promise that I will do whatever it takes to ensure that my horrible mistake is never repeated. I am so sorry to my family, friends, fans and those that look to follow a better example.”

Wish I could make a public statement to explain away a DUI.
