Matt Fondy Wins USL Most Valuable Player Award

The last individual USL award of the 2015 season will go to the man who broke a major league record.

Louisville City FC striker Matt Fondy takes home the honor after setting a club and league record of 22-goals on the season.

Fondy was one of Louisville City FC’s first signings after two less than stellar spells at Chivas USA and the Chicago Fire. The twenty-six year old hadn’t scored a goal since 2013 when he was with the Los Angeles Blues. Since that point, he made only sixteen appearances with the two MLS sides before signing with Louisville City.

In his first season he definitely surpassed expectations as did his team, which made it all the way to the Eastern Conference Final.

Head coach James O’Connor certainly believed in Fondy from day one and pushed the player to evolve his game.

“In past season I’ve liked to come deeper in the midfield and get the ball, get involved in the play, help our buildup,” said Fondy to “James (O’Connor) was constantly reiterating that I need to stay high, to stay on the centerback’s shoulders, use my ability to hurt the opposing team the most. It’s just different to play for a coach that values you and sees you leading the team or being a captain,” said Fondy. “I definitely took to James, and my relationship with my teammates was great. You could see the results on the field.”

Along the way, Fondy grabbed four USL Player of the Week Awards and was featured on the USL Best XI for 2015.
