Confirming reports from Peru, Alexander Callens is set to join New York City FC by the end of the week head coach Patrick Vieira said.

Callens is a 24-year-old centerback who recently renounced his contract with Numancia. Multiple reports from Peru indicate that he would be in New York for a physical and is set to sign a one-year contract with the club. A photo near Grand Central Terminal appeared on Callens’ Instagram account last night. The left-sided centerback has made 13 appearances with the Peruvian National Team since 2013.

“He is one of the players we identified as a good player — a really good player who can do really well for us,” Vieira said in a conference call with reporters. “We are in the process of talking and negotiating with the club but there is nothing more we can say out of respect for the player and the club but there’s no confirmation to make yet but he is a player that we are interested in.”

It is curious to hear Vieira mention negotiations with Numancia since Callens is technically a free agent and therefore NYCFC would not have to compensate Numancia. Nevertheless, Callens is reportedly set to join the team in Florida once he passes his physical. He would be the club’s fourth centerback joining Ethan White, Frederic Brillant and Maxime Chanot and the tenth player on the roster aged 24 or younger.

Before spending the last two seasons with Numancia, Callens was at Real Sociedad for four years but spent nearly his entire time playing with their B Team. Callens would ultimately make one senior appearance with Sociedad before signing with Numancia as a free agent in August 2015.
