Vieira: Poku transfer benefits both parties

The sale of fan-favorite Kwadwo Poku will equally benefit Poku and New York City FC, head coach Patrick Vieira said in Thursday conference call.

“Poku will play every week and it will be good for the football club because we received an offer we couldn’t refuse,” Vieira said. “Both parties are happy.”

Miami FC paid $700,000 or $750,000 to NYCFC according to separate reports from Empire of Soccer and Sports Illustrated’s Grant Wahl respectively. Poku will be paid $500,000 in salary but Vieira said Poku will benefit the most from regular playing time.

“I know that Poku was a fan-favorite,” Vieira said. “Everybody loved him here. The fans, the players even myself but the decision was made because of football. That’s why Poku going there will be good because he will guaranteed to play every weekend and that wasn’t the case with us.”

Poku only made seven appearances this season for City. He scored once in 268 minutes. Those totals could improve at Miami as the NASL side is in the midst of a midseason overhaul after finishing last in the Spring Season. NYCFC will receive between $460,000 and $500,000 for the transfer which can be used as allocation money for paying transfer fees or buying down the budget charge of existing contracts. Vieira said he will discuss summer transfer plans with sporting director Claudio Reyna.

“We will want to improve the team,” Vieira said. “We’re going to start talking with Claudio and see which parts of the team we need to improve. But still, we will need to improve the team.”

Reyna told fans at City in the Boroughs that he is looking at center back and forward as possible areas to address. The MLS transfer window opens July 4.
