Villa brace not enough in 3-2 loss to Columbus

BRavo Villa NYCFC

by DAVE MARTINEZ

This is one night New York City FC will like to forget.

Conceding a goal in the seventh minute, NYCFC played from behind all evening. Ethan Finlay, Justin Meram and Kei Kamara quelled a David Villa brace for the victory at home.

Columbus found the score sheet early, exposing space on the left wing with a Justin Meram run to the box. The Iraqi international put the ball at center and found an onrushing Ethan Finlay for the lead in the 7th minute. Just minutes later, a similar setup by Meram nearly set up Kamara for a second.

Playing from behind, NYCFC took an aggressive stance on offense and it quickly paid off. David Villa found himself on the end of a picture-perfect Andoni Iraola cross, heading home his chance past Clark for the tying goal in the 15th minute. Two minutes later, Iraola and Villa hooked up once again, but Villa’s one-time volley fell just wide of net.

Kamara nearly doubled the Columbus lead in the 27th minute, ringing a shot off the post.  He continued to be a pest for the NYCFC defense through the halftime whistle. Five minutes after scoring, Kamara once again found himself in space, nodding a header wide of net. The Sierra Leonian forward made it a trifecta in the 37th, rolling a shot wide of Saunders net. He ended the half with two additional chances that just missed their mark.

Kamara finally broke through five four minutes into the second. With Matarrita out of position, Kamara took the ball in space one-on-one with Saunders, beating him far post for the lead.

Both Villa and Mix Diskerud put attempts on net, but it was once against Columbus finding goal. With Mataritta caught high, Meram streaked down the right side, sending a center cross to Finlay for the finish.

Late game sub Kwadwo Poku managed to draw a penalty from an errant Tyson Wahl challenge, allowing David Villa to cut the lead to one. Michael Parkhurst was hit with a red card in the 87th minute, giving New York a slight advantage. With that, Patrick Mullins managed a shot on a Khiry Shelton feed, but Clark beat him to the ball, ultimately dealing NYCFC the loss.

New York now travel to Philadelphia to take on the Union on the road.

It is entirely possible that this team will not win anot her game all season. It’s also possible that Lampard may not play all year. It’s also possible that Nick Chavez is much chubbier than his Twitter picture.

    • Pirlo (Iron Lung)

I’ll drink -hiccup- to that! Hey barkeep, got a light?

I tried to get as many bogus PKs called for team glam. I need to ask King David Beckham what to do next.

    • Nick Chavez

You all miss the point. The question isn’t whether NYCFC will win a few games or not. The question is whether you feel handsome and debonair being part of the worldwide global footballing phenomena known as City Football Group. Does your facial hair look better? Are you more hip? When you walknow in a room does David Bowie”s “Watch That Man” play without provocation? Are you more international? That is something I know all about as I have been a Madridista for 14 years. These are the things you should be asking yourself.

You know, I don’t always watch American, but when I do, it’s NYCFC.

      Stay hip, my friends.

I am so upset. I can’t find my hair dryer this morning.

Anyway I had a ball in Ohio. Me and my girl- the model who never smiles- were all decked out in our NYCFC gear. I couldn’t be more proud to be a supporter of this organic, pure and classic club. The only downside is Korean tofu and tasty kale is so hard to find in the Columbus area. No worries – I packed some kimbap and also a few organic tuna with sprouts on wheat bread sandwiches. We listened to Coldplay and Maroon 5 the whole trip! God I’m loving life!

I wish I could have joined you but my new girlfriend, the Asian hand model, was doing a spoken word performance in Bushwick. There’s a really cool Ethiopian-Belgian Fusion restaurant in Colombus where they play nu jazz music. I will show you next time.

Leagues around the world take note. This is something very special.

  • Pirlo

Why so much running in this league??????

    • Fat Frank

I don’t do any running. I get paid to sit on my arsenal, drink beer and sell jerseys.
