Wambach breaks Mia Hamm’s All-Time Scoring Record (with video)

Mia Hamm’s icon 158 goals in international competition stood head and shoulders atop the record books of both Women’s and Men’s soccer worldwide.

But records, of course, are meant to be broken.

An inspired Abby Wambach entered Thursday’s friendly encounter against Korea Republic two goals behind American soccer’s most celebrated female athlete. It took her 29 minutes to score a hat trick. 58 minutes later, she walked off the field at Red Bull Arena two goals ahead of Hamm.

Her 160 goals are a new world record and a celebrated achievement for everyone – including the former record holder.

Hamm even issued a statement in Wambach’s honor.

“I’m just so proud of her,” Hamm said in the statement. “Just watching those four goals, that’s what she’s all about. She fights for the ball, she’s courageous and she never gives up. Her strength and perseverance is what makes her so great and it’s what defenders and opposing teams fear.

“From being my teammate early in her career, I know all she ever wanted to do was win and she continues to do that,” she said.

“I’m just glad I got to share 158 with her. It was short, but it was fun.”

Didn’t get a chance to see history in the making? Not at Red Bull Arena tonight? Here are all four goals:
