Former Portuguese international and ex-manager of Hungarian side Videoton Paulo Sousa is the lead candidate to take on the New York Red Bulls head coaching position. He enjoyed great success over the past two years with Videoton, but is perhaps best known for his unceremonious five month stay at the helm of a volatile Queens Park Rangers.
Since being connected to the Red Bulls, many fans have wondered what he could bring to the table. As far as his character, Sousa will likely fill the bill for what Red Bulls Global Director of Soccer Gerard Houllier wants in a head coach; a passionate, track suit manager who emphasizes education as much as tactics.
But what can he bring on the management side? His short coaching resume is filled with peaks and valleys.

@empireofsoccer wait I thought this was a myth?
@Hisco5 @empireofsoccer Ha. If that’s a Kaiser Soze joke, I’m laughing.
@EmpireOfSoccer Thanks for these, Dave. And again, thanks for all your great reporting and digging. Much appreciated.
@EmpireOfSoccer Love his touchline style, actually. Lots of intensity, but obvious warmth towards his players. Reminds me of Vermes.
@sdshields @EmpireOfSoccer His time in England seems to have been a disaster. One hopes he’s learned more about fitness, too.
@Paris_Gargoyle @sdshields @EmpireOfSoccer He did lay foundations of Swansea’s rise to EPL using attractive but solid play, so there’s that.
@G_R_Williams @sdshields @EmpireOfSoccer One hopes he’s learned something as a coach since then. Poor fitness in MLS is a death sentence
