U.S. Women’s coach Tom Sermanni fired

In a shock announcement late Sunday night, U.S. Soccer announced the termination of U.S. Women’s National Team coach Tom Sermanni, effective immediately.

“We want to thank Tom for his service over the past year and half, but we felt that we needed to go in a different direction at this time,” said U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati in a Federation statement. “We will begin looking for a new coach immediately to guide our Women’s National Team toward qualifying for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.”

The announcement comes mere hours after the USWNT claimed a convincing 2-0 victory over China.

Sermanni served less than 16-months at the helm of the program. He regularly experimented and refined his strategy with the side, most recently employing a 4-3-3 system against China. He tasted defeat just twice in his first 24 games in charge, both coming in a disappointing performance at teh Algarve Cup.

“I’m disappointed that things didn’t work out, but I’d like to thank U.S. Soccer for the opportunity to have coached this team and also the staff and players for all their hard work,” said Sermanni.

U.S. Soccer Director of Development Jill Ellis will serve as interim head coach, and will lead the USA’s next match against China on April 10 in San Diego. Gulati will address the media regarding the dismissal early this week.
