World Cup Preview and Predictions: Group G

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Group of Death.

The USMNT looks at a daunting task for qualification — and a series of storybook encounters that truly makes one wonder if this entire draw was scripted. Jurgen Klinsmann against the German National Team? Portugal with a shot to avenge their embarrassing 2002 World Cup loss to the U.S.? And do we even need to explain the significance of facing Ghana?

You couldn’t have written a better story.

The U.S. face not only stiff competition, but hungry competitors in a group where games cannot be taken for granted.

Germany are favored to take it all — and with good reason. Joachim Low’s men are not only experienced and talented, but they are very familiar with one another. Like the World Cup winning Spanish side of 2010, the core of Germany’s team comes from two of it’s most dominant and respected domestic sides; Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. Bastian Schweinsteiger, Thomas Müller, Toni Kroos, Mario Götze, captain Philipp Lahm and Manuel Neuer are just a taste of the Bundesliga All-Stars set to take battle in Group G — and some of those players aren’t even starting.

Many will pencil Portugal as the second seed, mostly due to the presence of one Cristiano Ronaldo. The reigning Balon D’Or winner will be a handful for any defense, but he cannot do it alone. Lucky for him, Portugal are far from a one-man team, with a stout defense and vibrant wing play sure to open up opportunities for the Real Madrid striker.

And who can forget Ghana? Certainly not the U.S.. This year’s version of the African side is more experienced in the midfield — and arguably a notch more dangerous at forward. Michael Essien and Andre Ayew shield a disciplined backline, led by centerback John Boye. Kevin-Prince Boateng will bring the creativity in the middle while players like Christian Atsu, Asamoah Gyan and newcomer Majeed Waris will run defenses to the ground.

Whoever makes it out of this group will certainly have earned their spot in the knockout rounds.

[colored_box color=”red”]EOS PREDICTIONS:

FINISH COUNTRY WIN LOSS DRAW POINTS G/D
1 GERMANY
2 0 1 7 +3
2 PORTUGAL
1 1 1 4 +0
3 UNITED STATES 1 1 1 4 -1
4 GHANA 0 2 1 1 -2

[/colored_box]

Germany 2-1 Portugal
United States 2-1 Ghana
Germany 1-1 Ghana
United States 2-2 Portugal
Portugal 2-1 Ghana
Germany 3-1 United States

Germany will prove their class in this group from the starting match.  Portugal will be looking to make a statement, but the German team will simply be too strong, particularly on defense, for the Selecao to break.  That will separate Germany from the pack from week one.  Of course, that isn’t to say Portugal would take an opening defeat lying down.  Ronaldo’s men stack up well against Ghana and will be looking to take points from the U.S..  Ultimately, we see them going through, with the U.S. one goal away from forcing a deeper draw breaker for the second spot.

For the U.S., it can be an early exit — but a meaningful one.  Strong performances against Ghana and Portugal will certainly be encouraging, but Germany will simply overpower and overwhelm a driven Yank side.

you think Germany is going to let Ghana draw them? Remember, this is Germany. Germany will beat them down and play back ups v. the USMNT in which the US will beat Portugal for in terms of GD to reach the KO stages.

I think Dave is just accounting for one shock result. I can see Germany beating Portugal, Ghana losing to the US amd their momentum producing that kind of result.
