Wright-Phillips the Elder Signs With Phoenix

The form New York Red Bulls winger Shaun Wright-Phillips has signed with the most ambitious USL side this off-season, Phoenix Rising. Wright-Phillips joins Omar Bravo and Jordan Stewart on the team, which is coached by Frank Yallop.

“We’re thrilled to have a player of Shaun’s quality and experience joining us,” Yallop said. “This is another step towards making us one of the most competitive clubs in USL.”

Wright-Phillips played two seasons for the Red Bulls, but made only 19 appearances for the club. Despite signing midseason in 2015, he was never able to wrestle a starting position from Mike Grella or Gonzalo Verón. He was even overshadowed by newcomers such as Alex Muyl and Daniel Royer.

Before his time in MLS, Wright-Phillips played more than 200 games with Manchester City in separate stints between 1999 and 2011. He also played for sides Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers. He was on teams that won the 2005-6 Premier League title and the 2006-7 F.A. Cup.

Phoenix has ambitious plans, which has included a club rebranding and some major signings.
