Wynalda not impressed by New York Cosmos

Most observers of the NASL are quick to point out the New York Cosmos are a cut above in the talent department when compared to the rest of the league.

Don’t count Eric Wynalda amongst them.

Despite suffering a crushing 4-0 loss to the Cosmos, the Atlanta Silverbacks’ Technical Director/Head Coach followed a calm and collected demeanor on the touchline with a matter-of-fact delivery off of it, telling the gathered press that the Cosmos reputation is a bit over blown.

“They are not as good as we made them look, I will tell you that,” he said. “They are not that good.

“They were very fortunate on a lot of plays. I don’t think the scoreline was reflective of the game.”

All in all, Wynalda does have a stat sheet to prove his point. The Cosmos put on 19 total shots to Atlanta’s 20. The Silverbacks earned six corners to the Cosmos seven.

Where they differed greatly was effectiveness. While even in attempts on net, the Cosmos managed 12 on frame to the Silverbacks’ seven. They also edged the visitors out in possession, 52% to 48%.

The most telling stat, of course, is the scoreline. Even there, Wynalda was hesitant to credit the hosts.

“I think we got a little unfortunate on a couple of situations there,” he said. “If you look at some of the chances they had, it wasn’t really pretty. None of that was pretty. Standard situations, a corner kick, and one of our guys fell down on the turf.

“You can either start making excuses or take it for what it’s worth,” he continued. “I thought the second half got better in a hurry. We tried to get back in the game. We risked it a lot. We wound up losing one of our defenders and that made things a little more problematic. He was hurt on the last goal. He couldn’t even jump.

“Believe it or not, some good pieces out of this we can take with us and try to build off of.”

For his part, Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese issued a straight no comment when asked about the Silverbacks’ play, or the performance of it’s new head coach.
