Yanks Abroad: Weekend Roundup

US logoWith Liga MX games postponed for the weekend, the spotlight on Americans abroad was in Europe. From Lynden Gooch scoring his first goal in the League Championship to Matt Miazga‘s Vitesse defeating Ajax at the Amsterdam Arena, here is how Americans abroad faired over the weekend:

Lynden Gooch (Sunderland)

It has not been a great start to the 2017-18 League Championship season for Sunderland. The former Premier League side is already in the relegation zone after only nine games. Gooch was able to lighten his mood in his side’s 2-1 loss to Cardiff by scoring from the spot.

Christian Pulisic (Dortmund)

Dortmund continued its winning ways by dismantling Borussia Mönchengladbach, 6-1. Pulisic played 64 minutes and did not register a goal or an assist. Dortmund is in first place in the Bundesliga after six games.

Fabian Johnson (Mönchengladbach)

Johnson was on the receiving end of Pulisic’s win. He was able to earn his first start of the season in the one-sided loss.

DeAndre Yedlin (Newcastle)

Yedlin continued to earn a starting spot under Manager Rafa Benitez since returning from his injury. Nevertheless, Yedlin was unable to help Newcastle overcome Brighton Hove & Albion. The Toons lost, 1-0 ,after conceding a 51st-minute goal to Tomer Hemed.

Bobby Wood (Hamburg)

Hamburg extended its losing streak to four after losing, 3-0, to Bayer Leverkusen. Wood played the full 90 as a center forward and was unable to offer any offensive production. He has scored one goal in five games this season.

Timothy Chandler (Frankfurt)

Chandler was unable to help Frankfurt complete its comeback against RB Leipzig. Down by 2-0 through the first 77 minutes, Frankfurt was able to draw within one after a goal by Ante Rebic. It wasn’t enough as Leipzig defense held on for the 2-1 win.

Tim Ream (Fulham)

A late goal saw Fulham draw with Middlesbrough. Cyrus Christie leveled the score in the 88th minute after Aboubakar Kamara gave Fulham the lead two minutes before. Ream played the full 90 as a center back.

Matt Miazga (Vitesse)

Vitesse continued its quest for first after defeating Ajax, 2-1, at the Amsterdam Arena. Miazga started as a center back and helped his team maintain a shutout until the 83rd minute when Nick Viergever scored.

Alfredo Morales (Ingolstadt)

Ingolstadt remained in the relegation zone after their 2-0 loss to Bochum. Morales played the entire match as a central midfielder, but was unable to spark the offense.

Mix Diskerud (Goteborg)

Diskerud grabbed his fourth goal of the season in Goteborg’s 2-1 loss to Hammarby. Goteborg remains midlevel in the Allsvenskan table.
